About
Not long after graduating from the University of Connecticut I worked as a career information specialist in a government-funded counseling service where professional editors with heavy but skillful hands helped me to understand the difference between writing and writing. “Your writing is fine,” one said to me, “you just need to work on your subject/verb agreement.” It took a while for me to realize the depth of that insult. I got the message with continual review by her and others through the year, I think I have at least gotten that part right.
That was also the beginning of the high tech revolution, so interest in technology careers was growing rapidly and with it the demand for writing about technical topics. Having been a chemistry set kid who if it weren’t for the sixties probably would have studied engineering, technology writing came pretty easily to me. I gravitated from writing about careers for counseling agencies and education magazines to the world of public relations and advertising, essentially writing for hire under a client’s byline, which, combined with strategic marketing, is what I have been doing for more than 20 years.
My interest in career education remained, however, manifesting itself in helping friends with resumes and college application essays. It turned out the my career education experience, combined with my writing skills, and firsthand knowledge of almost every field, helped bring a resume to life.
People seemed to appreciate my counsel and consistently urged me to set up shop, so they could refer others. This is very much a moonlight operation for me though, so I don’t want to conflict with my day job but will provide my own resume on request or with quote for your business.
